The National Commission for Women (NCW) on Tuesday launched a legal aid clinic to assist women in distress.
The facility will operate out of the NCW’s headquarters in New Delhi. It has been set up in collaboration with Delhi State Legal Services Authority (DLSA), which will provide legal counselling for free. Women can simply walk-in to access legal advice.
The NCW is also planning to set up similar facilities at its State Commissions across the country.
“Today is the day that opens up a new chapter in the NCW’s continuous efforts to help women. The legal aid clinic will focus on protecting women’s rights and providing them with a one-stop centre for seeking legal counselling and help,” NCW Chairperson Rekha Sharma said.
The NCW also registers complaints made by women from around the country. In 2021, it received over 30,000 complaints, out of which 36% of complaints pertained to the right to live with dignity, 21.7% were about domestic violence, and 15% were on dowry harassment and harassment faced by women in marriages.
