NC State Baseball Players Return To College World Series

North Carolina State's Eli Serrano III (16) celebrates with Alec Makarewicz (99) after hitting a home run during an NCAA regional baseball game against South Carolina on Saturday, June 1, 2024,

North Carolina State's baseball team is back at the College World Series after a tumultuous exit in 2021 due to a COVID-19 outbreak. Four players, including Sam Highfill, have returned to Omaha, savoring the opportunity to compete once again. Highfill expressed the difficulty of reaching the CWS, acknowledging the competitive nature of the journey.

The Wolfpack's unfortunate experience in 2021 saw them with only 13 players available for a crucial game against Vanderbilt, resulting in a 3-1 loss. Despite the setback, players like Highfill and Garrett Payne displayed resilience and determination in the face of adversity.

Coach Elliott Avent described the emotional toll of having to inform his team that they were unable to continue in the CWS, highlighting the somber atmosphere during their return journey. However, the team found solace upon their return to Raleigh, where they were greeted by a supportive crowd of 2,000 fans.

Joining Highfill at this year's CWS are Carson Falsken, Noah Soles, and Logan Whitaker, all seeking redemption and a chance at glory. Avent emphasized the healing process that took place upon their return, noting the admiration and support they received from fans.

While Avent has not forgotten or forgiven the NCAA's decision to remove his team from the 2021 CWS, he remains focused on the present. The team's resilience and determination have propelled them back to the grand stage, where they aim to make a statement and leave a lasting impact.
