NBA Urges Players To Boost Home Security Measures

The NBA is advising its players to enhance security measures at their homes in light of recent high-profile burglaries involving several athletes. The league has issued a memo to team officials, warning about the activities of 'transnational South American Theft Groups' that are known for their sophisticated and organized approach to burglaries.

Recent victims of these burglaries include Milwaukee Bucks forward Bobby Portis, Minnesota Timberwolves guard Mike Conley Jr., and Kansas City Chiefs players Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce. Conley's home was broken into on Sept. 15, while Portis' residence was targeted on Nov. 2. Mahomes and Kelce both had their homes burglarized last month.

The FBI has linked these theft rings to advanced techniques such as pre-surveillance, the use of drones, and signal jamming devices. The burglars are primarily interested in cash and easily resalable items like jewelry, watches, and luxury bags.

In response to these incidents, the NBA is recommending that players install updated alarm systems with cameras, keep valuables in secure safes, and remove any online real estate listings that could reveal details about their homes. The league also suggests utilizing protective guard services during extended absences and considering the use of dogs for added security.

The NFL has also issued a similar warning to its teams following the break-ins involving Mahomes and Kelce. Both athletes expressed their disappointment over the incidents, with Mahomes emphasizing the ongoing investigation and the impact of such violations on individuals.

Portis, who offered a reward for information related to the burglary of his home, lamented the loss of his prized possessions. The break-ins have raised concerns among professional athletes about the safety of their homes and the need for heightened security measures.

As the investigations continue, both leagues are working closely with law enforcement agencies to address the issue and ensure the safety of their players and their properties.
