With rookies reporting to training camp in Spartanburg on Saturday, the excitement around Carolina Panthers quarterback Bryce Young only seems to be growing. In fact, there’s a pretty high-profile individual sharing in that excitement.
Golden State Warriors superstar and Panthers superfan Steph Curry recently spoke with CBS Sports writer Cody Benjamin about a wide range of interesting topics. Among them was the new face of his favorite NFL team.
“Extremely excited,” Curry said of Young, via Benjamin. “I’m excited that we have hopefully the quarterback of the future that can lead the franchise to the heights that we (enjoyed) with Cam (Newton), and potentially get that first Super Bowl. I’m excited to watch him play. I’m rooting for him. I’m excited for the city of Charlotte to have some new excitement, some new energy around the team. I’ll be tuned in for Opening Week for sure.”
Opening Week will see Young and the Panthers visit the division rival Atlanta Falcons on Sunday, Sept. 10. And if Curry is indeed tuning in, he may see some of himself in the 2023 first overall pick.
Despite the difference in, ya know, sports, the former Heisman Trophy winner has often been compared to the four-time world champion and two-time NBA Most Valuable Player. Young’s point guard-like ability to orchestrate an offense with precision and touch—even with his smaller stature—has reminded folks of Curry’s game.
Oh, and Curry isn’t the first person throw out that Cam Newton feel for Young either.
