NBA 2K23 patch notes: 5 biggest changes in update 2.0

Season 2 of NBA 2K23 is less than 24 hours away, and the team behind the game has released the patch notes ahead of time, so we know what’s coming. If you’ve been waiting for a lot of the game’s major issues to be fixed, then it’s good news, as this is a huge update that fixes tonnes of bugs and makes useful adjustments and additions elsewhere.

We’ll walk you through all the most important changes in this gargantuan patch, which will be released for all platforms on October 21.

Bill Russell “6” patch

To put it mildly, Bill Russell is among the biggest legends in the history of the NBA. All-told he won a combined 39 All-Star selections, All-NBA selections, and MVP awards in his career, and spent a lot of time off the court fighting for civil rights. He sadly passed away on July 31, 2022, and to honor his memory, the NBA announced that a patch with the No. 6 from his iconic jersey would feature on all player uniforms for the 2022-23 season. NBA 2K23 follows suit with this update, as the “6” patch will be added to the uniforms and arenas for all 30 teams.

Likeness update for players

As with all sports games, sometimes the digital versions of players don’t quite line up with how they actually look. Sometimes the sculpting is sub-par, but sometimes players drastically change their style, making the game seem pretty outdated. Either way, this round of likeness updates will improve the designs of 102 players and coaches, so everyone should be looking a bit more accurate.

MyPlayer progression speed increased

MyPlayer is a pretty fun mode in the NBA games, but it’s easy for your progress to stall, and be stuck grinding out games for far too long. In an attempt to remedy this, the overall progression speed in MyPlayer is now much faster, meaning you can get to the good stuff a lot faster, and with a lot less tedious grinding.

Animation bug fixed

A bug that’s been in the NBA series since NBA 2K17 has finally been fixed. While the patch notes labeled it as a “rare issue”, it’s been one of the biggest problems with MyCareer for years. This issue would cause all of your set animations in MyCareer to reset to default almost any time you launched the mode, which led to many players not bothering to set them. Thankfully, this should finally be done and dusted, so you can set animations without fear it’ll all be for nothing.

CPUs no longer use layup timings

While the AI in sports games is far from the most advanced out there, this was a case where the CPU players were far too good. During layups, CPUs were able to almost always hit the right timing, even when under extremely heavy opposition. To fix this, they now no longer use the timing system. Exactly what they use instead is unclear, but it should stop them from being “unrealistically proficient”, as the dev team put it.

You can read all of the many changes and fixes in this patch on the official NBA 2K website.
