NatWest online banking down leaving customers locked out of bank accounts

Customers of NatWest and Royal Bank of Scotland are unable to access online banking due to an IT outage this morning.

Hundreds of users have reported issues with logging in, according to website DownDetector.

Around 1,000 people have reported problems with NatWest and 40 with RBS, with around 50% of customers having app issues and 50% problems with the website.

Users started logging the issue at around 9.30am today.

NatWest app users get an error message when trying to log in which says: "We're sorry, some kind of error has occurred when trying to establish a connection between your device and ourselves."

NatWest customers soon turned to social media to find out what was going on.

One user reported that he was unable to use the NatWest app:

The issue affects two high street banks owned by the NatWest Group - NatWest and Royal Bank of Scotland.

The group also owns banks including Ulster Bank and Coutt's the Queen's bank - neither of which have been affected by this outage.

Other NatWest users reported being unable to access its online banking service.

One said: "@NatWest_Help trying to log into Natwest Bankline and it isnt loading at all.. Need access to this asap.. Any idea on time it will be fixed.. This is logged in to via website not app."

A NatWest spokesperson told The Mirror: “Mobile banking is now working as normal and we apologise for the inconvenience caused.”

The bank has also been messaging people on social media to say the problem has now been fixed.

What to do if you're locked out of your account

If you can't get into your NatWest or RBS app, some users report being able to use online banking with no problems.

If you can't access either, you can call NatWest customer services on 03457 888 444 or locate your nearest physical branch here.

The NatWest Group was formerly the RBS Group, but it rebranded in July 2020 to distance itself from the legacy of the 2008 financial crash.

RBS very nearly collapsed after the crisis and was bailed out by the government.

For several years, RBS was loss-making and did not pay out any dividends, while remaining majority-owned by the state.

Royal Bank of Scotland was established in Edinburgh in 1727.

In 2011, it created the world’s first fully-functional banking app.

Today, the bank employs almost 12,000 people and serves 1.8million personal customers and more than 110,000 business customers UK wide.

The bank’s 20 mobile branches serve around 650 communities in Scotland.

Last month an IT outage hit the UK's biggest banking group. Lloyds Bank, Halifax and Bank of Scotland customers all struggled to access their accounts.

Back in January an IT crash hit bank TSB, and hundreds of TSB customers were left unable to access their money.

Customers on social media said the bank's app and online banking website are both down - leaving them unable to make payments and manage transactions.
