NATO has announced the launch of a new mission named Baltic Sentry to safeguard undersea cables in the Baltic Sea region. The decision comes in response to a series of incidents in the area that have raised concerns about potential Russian activities.

Secretary-General Mark Rutte revealed the initiative during a meeting in Helsinki with leaders from NATO countries bordering the Baltic Sea. Rutte highlighted the importance of protecting undersea cables, which facilitate over 95% of internet traffic and secure an estimated $10 trillion in financial transactions daily.

The Baltic Sentry mission will involve the deployment of frigates, maritime patrol aircraft, and naval drones to enhance surveillance and deterrence in the region. The operation aims to bolster vigilance and safeguard critical infrastructure against potential threats.

Recent reports indicated the presence of a Russian 'shadow fleet' vessel near a natural gas pipeline running from Norway to Poland, raising additional security concerns. The Baltic Sea allies emphasized their commitment to defending against any threats to security, infrastructure, and the environment.

In response to the challenges posed by the shadow fleet, the Baltic Sea nations pledged to explore innovative solutions, develop new technologies for surveillance, and enhance partnerships with the private sector. Germany and Sweden have already committed to participating in the Baltic Sentry mission, with plans to contribute naval capabilities and warships to strengthen NATO's presence in the Baltic Sea.

As NATO allies gear up to address maritime security threats in the region, Rutte emphasized the alliance's determination to combat any attacks on critical infrastructure. The leaders underscored their readiness to take action against vessels circumventing sanctions and posing risks to security and the environment.

The Baltic Sentry mission represents a collaborative effort to safeguard undersea cables, enhance surveillance capabilities, and counter potential threats in the Baltic Sea region. By leveraging a range of resources and technologies, NATO aims to ensure the security and integrity of vital undersea infrastructure.
