NEWMARKET trainer Charlie Appleby made it an historic three victories in all of this year’s 2,000 Guineas after Native Trial took the Irish classic at the Curragh on Saturday in the hands of William Buick.
Appleby had celebrated success in the English Guineas with Coroebus, the French classic with Modern Games and now made it a clean sweep when taking the Irish, all carrying the Godolphin silks.
Native Trial, runner-up to Coroebus in the Guineas at Newmarket, justified his cramped odds of 2-5 when proving too strong for New Energy with Imperial Fighter in third place.
Appleby said: "We've been very fortunate to come into these Group One races with fancied horses and of course there is a certain amount of excitement, nerves and relief!”
Appleby has yet to decide if Native Trail will face a rematch with Coroebus in the St James's Palace Stakes at Royal Ascot.
Buick was earlier on the mark with Brad The Brief in the Greenlands Stakes for Hugo Palmer.
