New Delhi: The Reservation Bachao Sangharsh Samiti has called for a nationwide Bharat Bandh today on August 21, 2024, in response to a Supreme Court ruling that allows sub-categorization within SC/ST reservations.
The Bandh is getting support from various social and political organizations, particularly in Rajasthan.
High alert in various states
Police across several states, especially in Uttar Pradesh, are on high alert to maintain law and order. Emergency services will remain operational during the strike.
SC Ruling
The recent Supreme Court ruling permits the sub-categorization of Scheduled Castes (SC) and Scheduled Tribes (ST) within reservation policies. The ruling, which states, "Those who really need it should get priority in reservation," has sparked widespread debate and prompted this large-scale protest.
Subcategories in SC/ST
The Top Court's decision to allow states to create sub-categories within SC and ST reservations has been met with strong opposition. Many believe that this ruling undermines the principles of social justice by potentially depriving certain groups of their rightful share in reservations. The Bharat Bandh aims to challenge this decision, demanding its reversal to ensure that all sections of the SC/ST community continue to receive equal benefits.
Bandh getting wide support
The Bharat Bandh is receiving widespread support, particularly from SC/ST groups in Rajasthan. Various social and political organizations have also extended their backing, highlighting the importance of the issue.
The protest is not only a response to the Supreme Court's decision but also a call for preserving the existing reservation system that many believe is essential for promoting social equity in India.
In anticipation of potential unrest, police across various states have been instructed to increase deployment.
Special security in UP
According to reports, western Uttar Pradesh has been identified as a particularly sensitive area, with police on high alert. "We have asked our officials to organize meetings with groups calling for the bandh, as well as with market associations, to facilitate better cooperation," said the DGP. (with Agency inputs)
