News was delivered to the nation just after 6.30pm on Thursday that Queen Elizabeth II had died at Balmoral a few hours earlier, at the age of 96, as several senior members of the Royal Family headed to Scotland to be with her. Buckingham Palace announced the death of Her Majesty in a statement which read: 'The Queen died peacefully at Balmoral this afternoon. The King and Queen Consort will remain at Balmoral and return to London in the morning."

The Queen's passing prompted an outpouring of grief and tributes from across the world, including one from National TV Awards legends Ant and Dec, who are aiming to win the Best Presenter accolade at the NTAs for a 21st year.

Taking to Twitter, the Geordie presenters said: "We are deeply saddened by the passing of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. It is hard to believe she will no longer be with us. Our thoughts, prayers and condolences are with King Charles and the entire Royal Family. Rest In Peace Your Majesty. And thank you".
