National Television Awards postponed following Queen Elizabeth II's death

The National Television Awards 2022 has been postponed following the death of Queen Elizabeth II.

Her Majesty The Queen, 96, died on Thursday afternoon at her beloved Scottish estate, Balmoral, with Buckingham Palace confirming the news shortly after.

Following her death, many events and programmes on television were cancelled out of respect for the Queen.

This year's NTAs, which was due to happen on Thursday, September 15, has been pushed back by a month.

Instead, ITV and Indigo Television made the decision to move it to Thursday, October 13, live from the OVO Arena Wembley.

It's not the only event to be cancelled or postponed after the announcement of the heartbreaking news.

The Mercury Prize was meant to occur on Thursday night, a few hours following her death.

In a statement shared with the Mirror, the organisers said: "Tonight’s Mercury Prize event has been postponed at this time of great national sorrow. We know everyone involved in the Mercury Prize will understand.

"Our thoughts and condolences are with The Royal Family at this very difficult time.

"We will make an announcement regarding future arrangements as soon as we are able."

Programmes such as EastEnders, Coronation Street and Emmerdale were also pulled from the air on BBC and ITV.

Channel 4 followed in the footsteps of BBC and ITV when the news of the Queen's death broke and pulled much of its scheduled programming – including Katie Price's eagerly anticipated documentary that had been due to premiere at 9pm yesterday evening.

Alex Mahon, Chief Executive of Channel 4 said: "On behalf of Channel 4, we are deeply saddened by the death of Her Majesty The Queen and our thoughts and condolences are with her family and the whole country.

"For over 70 years, she has united this nation, supporting the right of everyone to have the opportunity to succeed and celebrating the rich diversity of our communities."

Channel 5 yesterday pulled a planned episode of Cash in the Attic from the schedule as they extended their routine news broadcast by an hour.

The channel is also set to replace the documentary Princess Margaret & the Photographer: A Scandalous Marriage, with an episode of World's Most Scenic Railway Journeys.

However, Channel 4 will continue to air Gogglebox on Friday night.

A spokesman said: “ Channel 4 exists to offer viewers an alternative and that is particularly important at times like this. Gogglebox is a much loved national institution and it will air as planned tonight bringing a valuable sense of continuity for many of our viewers.”

Programming schedules continue to change following Her Majesty's death.
