National science agency spins up new AI workhorse

The national science agency will launch its new $15 million high performance computing cluster on Friday to speed up research in areas like artificial intelligence, image processing and robotics.

It replaces the CSIRO’s 2017 GPU cluster and is expected to deliver a step change in performance with servers and GPUs purpose built for large language models and other AI applications.

Housed in Canberra Data Centre’s Hume facility and running on Dell, Intel and NVIDIA hardware, it will be tasked with workloads like training AI models that can diagnose pathology from MRI scans.
