National media round-up as Newcastle continue 'steady climb to safety' with point at West Ham

Here's a look at what the national media have had to say after Newcastle's draw with West Ham.

Newcastle cope without injured stars

Alex Bysouth was quick to praise Newcastle for securing a point against the Hammers. Bysouth, of the BBC, said: "Howe only picked up one win in his first eight games as Newcastle boss, but has collected three from five league games since the turn of the year to move the club clear of the drop zone.

"This draw came despite the loss of Kieran Trippier, who has had an immediate impact at St James' Park since his arrival, and electric winger Allan Saint-Maximin - arguably Howe's two most important players.

"But the Magpies boss found Willock and Joelinton in impressive form, with the latter almost sneaking in at the back post early on during a spell of nervy West Ham defending.

"Despite their bright start, Newcastle looked set to enter the break a goal down, only for the usually assured Declan Rice to miscue a header into Willock's path. The 22-year-old midfielder was alert and scored his first goal of the season from a tight angle as Hammers goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski failed to scramble his shot off the line.

"The former Arsenal midfielder also zipped an effort wide from distance in the pouring rain in a second half that saw both sides struggle to assert themselves, and Newcastle will no doubt be the more satisfied with a point."

'Newcastle displaying a quality that money cannot buy'

Matt Law of the Telegraph praised Newcastle's money can't buy spirit after their draw with the Hammers. They said: "The winning run may be over, but it is now six Premier League games unbeaten for Newcastle United, who are displaying a quality that all their money cannot buy – spirit.

"Without their most significant January signing and missing their most exciting player, Newcastle could have easily wilted, and that is certainly what West Ham were hoping for.

"But Eddie Howe proved that the club’s good run, which has pulled Newcastle towards safety, has been built on far more than Saudi millions and their spirited display could yet cost West Ham a Champions League place.

"This was undoubtedly a missed opportunity for the home side, for whom Craig Dawson scored, but nobody could begrudge Newcastle their point thanks to Chris Willock netting his first goal of the season.

“We are feeling good at the moment, but we know football can change very quickly,” Howe said. “It’s all about the next game now. The players are pleased with the run we’ve been on, and now we need to remain very calm. Nobody is getting carried away with themselves.”

'Steady climb towards safety'

"Newcastle continued their steady climb towards safety after Joe Willock’s equaliser earned a draw at West Ham to extend their unbeaten run in the league to six games," said Simon Mail of the Guardian.

"The unimpressive hosts were fortunate to take the lead through Craig Dawson’s header but an instinctive finish from Willock ensured another step in the right direction for Newcastle under their manager, Eddie Howe.

"Failure to beat Watford in January seemed to be a major blow to Newcastle’s hopes of avoiding relegation, but 12 points from their last six matches – two more than they managed in the opening 18 games of a turbulent first half of the season – have eased their supporters’ fears and lifted them out of the bottom three.

Howe said: “I’m satisfied with the point but frustrated it maybe wasn’t more. The way we started the game was excellent. The only disappointment for me was that we only got one goal – there was more in it for us.

“From the moment the game kicked off we started in a really positive way and the team’s in a good place at the moment.”

"West Ham’s inability to maintain their lead, leaving them with one win from five in the league, prevented them from climbing back into fourth place and underlined the nagging feeling that a lack of squad depth will prove costly in their quest for Champions League football. Kurt Zouma returned to the starting lineup, with the defender the subject of derision from the Newcastle fans for the inexplicable social media video of him abusing his pet cat.

"Newcastle’s hopes of a fourth successive league win were hampered by the loss of Kieran Trippier after the defender fractured his foot against Aston Villa, as well as the flair and pace of Allan Saint-Maximin, who is sidelined with a calf injury."
