National media round-up as Leicester City 'turn up the heat' on Jesse Marsch and Leeds United

Pressure is beginning to mount on Jesse Marsch following defeat to fellow strugglers Leicester City. Leeds United were comfortably beaten by Brendan Rodgers' side at the King Power Stadium last night, to compile further misery on head coach.

Things started so brightly this season, with an emphatic 3-0 win over Chelsea at Elland Road the highlight of the campaign to date. However, that's also the last time the Whites won in the Premier League, a worrying sign baring in mind who they've played and who lies on the horizon prior to the winter break for the World Cup.

Marsch's side know they must win against Fulham to buy themselves some time before taking on Liverpool, Bournemouth and Tottenham Hotspur ahead of the World Cup. Last night's defeat to the Foxes has done nothing to quell any nerves about a repeat of last season.

Here's what the national media has had to say following last night's disappointing defeat:

Leicester cruise to victory and turn up the heat on Marsch

Mike McGrath of the Telegraph said: "How quickly pressure can shift on managers at the foot of the table. At the start of the evening all eyes were on Brendan Rodgers but 90 minutes later his team were off the bottom and it was Jesse Marsch facing questions over his future.

"Robin Koch’s own goal and a stunning move finished off by Harvey Barnes earned Leicester their second victory of the season, their other win coming after Rodgers’ job had looked insecure. After another two defeats, their manager was under scrutiny again but at the final whistle he punched the air towards the directors’ box.

"It was Marsch who stepped into the firing line, booed by fans after starting with his top-scorer, Rodrigo, on the bench then taking off his most productive forward, Luis Sinisterra. “What on earth is going on?” was the polite version of the Leeds fans’ chant. They sang Marcelo Bielsa’s name and were upset at his successor heading straight down the tunnel rather than acknowledging them."

Jesse Marsch insistent he has Leeds United backing

Tom Collomosse of the Daily Mail said: "Jesse Marsch insisted he had the full backing of the Leeds board after the fans turned on the manager during a dismal defeat at Leicester.

"The travelling supporters were angry with Marsch for failing to acknowledge them after a match in which they booed his changes, as well as subjecting the team to catcalls at half-time and full-time. They also chanted the name of former boss Marcelo Bielsa.

"Leeds are above the bottom three on goal difference alone and have not won since August. Yet despite the poor run, Marsch — who apologised to supporters for not applauding them — believes he is fireproof."

Jesse Marsch singled out for criticism after Leicester City defeat

Simon Stone of the BBC said: "Under-pressure Leeds boss Jesse Marsch was singled out for criticism by his own club's fans as the West Yorkshire side slipped to a disappointing defeat at fellow strugglers Leicester. The visitors were booed off at half-time as they trailed to a Robin Koch own goal and a second 10 minutes before the break from Harvey Barnes, who extended his record of scoring every time he plays against Leeds to five Premier League games.

"Then, when Marsch replaced popular Colombian winger Luis Sinisterra with striker Joe Gelhardt 15 minutes from time, the visiting fans responded with more jeers and cries of 'what is going on'. The final whistle brought more negative chants and American Marsch's position is starting to look shaky.

"Leicester's second win of the season was not enough to lift them out of the relegation zone, but it did move them to within a point of their 16th-placed opponents. And, while Brendan Rodgers' side have now picked up seven points from their last three home games, out-of-form Leeds are winless in seven and not picked up a point away from Elland Road since 13 August."
