This is how the national media reacted to Newcastle United’s 1-1 draw against Bournemouth.
‘Signs of frustration’ - Daily Mail
Daily Mail reporter Joe Bernstein highlighted how, despite optimism ahead of the campaign, Newcastle are level on points with Bournemouth going into the international break. Reference was also made to the audible frustration around St’ James’ Park at the full-time whistle.
Bernstein wrote: “As the league table is never meant to lie, it must be galling for Newcastle to still be level on points with newly-promoted Bournemouth going into the international break.

“For all the plaudits given to Toon boss Eddie Howe, his side are still looking for their first win since the opening day. Five of their seven matches have been draws and there were a few signs of frustration at St James' Park after their failure to overcome Howe's former side who were beaten 9-0 at Liverpool not long ago.”
‘Outstanding performer’ - Sky Sports
Kieran Trippier was singled out for special praise by Sky Sports after the game. The right-back struck the post with a speculative free-kick in the first half and showcased exactly why he has been given the armband this season.
Writing for Sky Sports, Zinny Boswell talked up Trippier’s chances of making the England squad despite facing stiff competition. His post-match analysis read: “Kieran Trippier was once again Newcastle's outstanding performer against Bournemouth on Saturday.
“He was one of the six full-backs named in Gareth Southgate's final England squad prior to the World Cup this week and is hitting a consistent patch at just the right time as we build up to Qatar. His experience and defensive qualities set him apart from England's other options, who also boast elite offensive output.
“As things stand, though, he may get into the team as left-back due to Ben Chilwell and Luke Shaw's lack of first-team minutes this season. It is also important to remember the threat he carries from set pieces. Southgate sticks with the players he knows and trusts, expecting Trippier to be a key figure for England in Qatar.”
‘Isak isolated’ - Guardian
Alexander Isak was “rationed” against Bournemouth due to a lack of service, reports The Guardian. Despite Bruno Guimaraes’ return, Newcastle failed to create chances for their record-breaking striker.
Louise Taylor wrote: “Bruno Guimarães is a fine midfielder but for once the Brazilian’s passes rarely bisected the visiting backline. Similarly, Alexander Isak, Howe’s rather isolated new £60million Swedish striker, found his touches strictly rationed.
“Indeed, bar looking mighty relieved when Kieran Trippier’s curving free kick brushed the outside of a post, Neto was surprisingly underworked. The hosts subsequently stretched Bournemouth to the limit but O’Neil’s players refused to snap.
“Those Las Vegas money men could arguably do a lot worse than the caretaker responsible for seamlessly repairing the damage inflicted by the 9-0 thrashing at Liverpool which prefaced Parker’s exit.”
