National Pet Day 2024: how to celebrate your furry friends

National Pet Day, the day pet owners everywhere can participate in celebrating their little companions, is celebrated annually on April 11.

This holiday gives owners a special day to make it all about their pet and pamper them.

Whether you have a cat, dog, hamster, reptile, or bird, National Pet Day encourages owners to cherish the joy pets bring into their home.

How to celebrate National Pet Day

Celebrating this special day is easy and fun. Here are just 10 things you can do to make your pet’s day.

Go for a long walk

While some animals do not require regular walks, taking your pet out for a stroll around the park is bound to make them happy. In general, animal experts say taking pets, like cats, for a walk is okay, as long as they are used to being outdoors, but recommend you slowly introduce them to wearing a harness.

Get them a Puppuccino

This doggy treat is not just for dogs. The delightful off-menu treat from Starbucks contains a simple lightly flavoured whipped cream and can be enjoyed by most pets. However, it’s worth seeking veterinary advice if your pet has digestive issues or allergies, though you can get a dairy-free whip instead.

Take them to a pet shop

Spoil your pet with a trip to the pet store and grab them a new toy. Experts say toys are important for your pets, as it provides them with comfort when they’re nervous, and enhances their skills.

Get them groomed

Pamper your fluffy friend with a special spa day treatment, like a gentle bath and a fluff trim!

Take them on a playdate

Do you have a friend or a family member with a pet? Consider setting up a playdate at a pet-friendly venue or even your local park, to help your pet socialise and give them the ‘pawfect’ day to run around free.

Bake them a pet-friendly cake

Your pet will always appreciate a treat! Pet-friendly cakes are both nutritious and a fun snack, packed with safe ingredients like shredded vegetables and and blended fruit.

Do a photoshoot

This is a fun way you can spend the day with your pet, and capture an adorable, life-long portrait you can cherish forever. The images will bring back fond memories years down the line.

Take them to a beach/the mountains

Let them explore nature as you take them on an outing to the beach or a safe walking trail on a mountain. This will obviously not be suitable for all pets, such as indoor cats.

Throw your pet a party

What better day to throw your pet a special party than on National Pet Day! It can be a good excuse for friends and family to socialise while making the day all about your little companion.

Play dress up

Pets love to be included in anything their human owner is doing. Style your pet in a fun and creative costume that brings out their best features.
