National Grid energy scheme 2023 to pay people to turn off electric from today

With the cost of living crisis still upon us, many households across the UK are trying to save money where they can. Well, some can save money today by turning off their gas and electricity.

Households signed up to the National Grid's Demand Flexibility Scheme (DFS) can save money by switching off outside of peak hours. Today's event asks for people to switch-off between 5pm and 6pm.

It has been estimated that households signed up to the scheme could save up to £100, by taking part in the 12 'demonstration tests' that are run throughout the year. If your energy provider participates in the scheme and you have a smart meter, then you may be eligible to apply.

Those who have already signed up to the scheme will have received a notification telling them about today's event, so they will know what to switch off and when. The money-saving will soon add up, if you take part in every event.

The National Grid's ESO website states: "If you have signed up to take part in the DFS scheme your electricity provider will contact you before a demonstration test or live event and ask if you want to participate in the following day’s event."

The scheme was approved to run from November 3, 2022 to March 31, 2023 by energy regulator Ofgem on November 4 last year, the Express reports. During this time the ESO will run a maximum of 12 demonstration tests, which will come with a "guaranteed minimum price of £3KWh", the ESO said that this means "a typical household could save approximately £100 across the maximum 12 demonstration tests."

After the announcement of the scheme's approval Fintan Slye, Executive Director of the ESO, said: “We are delighted that Ofgem have approved the use of our Demand Flexibility Service this winter. It will help mitigate the potential risks that the ESO has outlined in its Winter Outlook and will allow consumers to see a financial return for reducing their electricity use at peak times.

“As a responsible operator of the electricity system we have developed this innovative Demand Flexibility Service to compliment the robust set of tools we already use to balance the electricity system every day.” A list of energy providers who are taking part in the scheme can be found on the ESO website.
