National Geographic's five Edinburgh food dishes everyone should be eating and where to find them

So strong is Edinburgh's food and drink scene that it continues to gain international attention.

Travel mags and publications from across the globe continue to cover our city, well aware that thousands of tourists descend on the capital every year - with many of them wondering where to grab a bite to eat.

And the iconic National Geographic are the latest to rock up to the dining table in Edinburgh and give us their take on the city's tastiest food.

Their latest article, titled 'what they're eating in Edinburgh' lists five different dishes from five top capital eateries that tourists and locals should be ordering.

Here's what they suggested:

Tiramu-choux from Eleanore

Described as 'a light-as-a-feather pastry filled with a thick layer of coffee gelato, topped with a dusting of chocolate', the much-hyped Leith Walk food gem is considered 'Edinburgh's hottest restaurant' and their only dessert option is an essential order for diners.

Arbroath Smokie and chips from Creel Caught

Serving his Smokies 'simply, with lemon, dill butter, celeriac and Arran mustard slaw, as well as chips', National Chef of Scotland Gary MacLean's take on this traditional Scots dish is a must-buy meal at the Bonnie and Wild Food Market.

Shrimp Bun from Shrimpwreck

We've recently featured Shrimpwreck on Edinburgh Live, heralding their 'delicious, fresh seafood' and National Geographic are jumping onboard with the brilliant street food connoisseurs too. They recommend foodies plump for the Shrimp Bun, 'a hearty portion of battered king prawns, bacon, red onion, marie rose sauce and pickles.'

Barbecued duck breast from Heron

We all love barbecued food when we get to summer and this dish from Heron is particularly high end - 'barbecued St Brides duck breast, preserved salted plums, hoisin sauce and the lively additions of orange and cardamom'. Heron was recently named one of the best restaurants in the UK and is well worth a trip if you're in the city.

The Scotch Baba from Gleneagles Townhouse

Gleneagles Townhouse is very much the talk of the town just now. After a long wait, the highly anticipated new hotel opened its doors this week. And a trip to the restaurant should be on the cards according to Nat Geo, who recommend guests order the Scotch Baba, a take on rum baba, but with the cake soaked instead in a dram of whisky.
