Nathan Patterson will not be featuring at the 2022 World Cup after Scotland suffered a 3-1 defeat in their semi-final qualification match with Ukraine this evening.
Steve Clarke's side pulled one goal back late on through Callum McGregor, though were hit with a sucker punch as their opponents added a third with only moments remaining in the match. The Tartan Army finished second in their initial qualification group for the tournament which will be hosted later this year, meaning their only chance of participating in Qatar was through the play-off system.
The winner of tonight's match, which has been confirmed as Ukraine, will now face Wales on Sunday to decide who will be the 30th team to confirm their place at the World Cup. Scotland last qualified for the biggest international tournament in 1998 and have again come up short when it matters most.

Patterson was not involved for Clarke's side against Ukraine due to injury, though will likely have been left disappointed while watching on from home. Although not the outcome the 20-year-old or his team-mates would have wanted, it means Everton will send away one less player on international duty when the tournament takes place in the middle of the Premier League season between November 21 and December 18.
It was a night to remember for another Blues full-back, however, as Vitalii Mykolenko helped Ukraine to victory at Hampden Park and played the full 90 minutes.
