Nathan Patterson out of Scotland clash with Ukraine but Steve Clarke hints at potential Wales return

Nathan Patterson is out of Scotland’s World Cup play-off against Ukraine.

Coach Steven Naismith said the Everton full back would be given every chance to make the massive Hampden showdown.

Patterson has been sidelined for two months after an ankle operation and boss Steve Clarke revealed he will be out of the match.

However, Clarke hinted Patterson could be in contention for a winner-takes-all clash with Wales if the Scots can see off Ukraine.

Asked if everyone in his squad was okay, boss Clarke said: "Everyone except Nathan. Nathan has run out of time a little bit for the first game.

"So Nathan won't be involved in the first game but everyone else is good to go."

Clarke was asked at his pre-match press conference a the nation’s training HQ at Oriam about former Scotland skipper Graeme Souness saying that he wanted Ukraine to win and then go on to lift the World Cup.

And the manager said: "I can't put myself into anyone else's mind, everyone has their opinion on the situation. Every opinion will be different.

"I focus on myself, I want to go to Qatar with Scotland and the players want to go as well so that is what I will focus on.”

Asked if there was any disappointment that an ex-Scotland skipper would think that way, Clarke replied: "No, anyone can have their own opinion."
