Nathan Broadhead future explained after Everton forward signs new contract

Everton have confirmed that Nathan Broadhead has penned a new three-year contract with the club.

The Blues confirmed earlier this week that Broadhead would spend the campaign on loan at Wigan Athletic following their promotion to the Championship last season. The forward's new deal will see him remain at Goodison Park until June 2024.

Broadhead scored 13 goals - including several crucial late winners - as he helped the Black Cats secure promotion through the play-offs. Sunderland, where fellow Everton striker Ellis Simms is now on loan, were hopeful of securing Broadhead's return. But he will instead spend this season at Wigan, who were promoted alongside Alex Neil's side.

Broadhead made a significant contribution to the Black Cats' promotion campaign despite his season initially being disrupted by injury. He still reached double figures and late goals to seal wins against Shrewsbury Town and Gillingham were crucial in the final weeks of the campaign.

The Wales youth international made his senior Everton debut in December 2017, coming on as an 82nd-minute substitute in the 3-0 Europa League group stage win over Apollon Limassol in Cyprus. The 24-year-old then scooped the club's under-23 player-of-the-season prize following the young Blues' double-winning exploits in 2018/19.

Speaking on the deal, Everton director of football, Kevin Thelwell, said: "We're pleased Nathan has signed this new deal and we're excited to see him continue his development with Wigan this season. We've seen Nathan score goals consistently throughout his time in the Academy, and, most recently, at Sunderland in League One.

"This season is another step in his development and the chance to play regular Championship football will no doubt improve his skillset even further."
