Natalie Imbruglia eyes up Neighbours return and says axing would be a 'travesty'

Natalie Imbruglia has said that she is open to returning to Neighbours, amid the Australian soap opera facing the axe.

The actress and singer, 47, made her on-screen debut as Beth Brennan in 1992 and remained on the show for two years, with her character last seen on Ramsay Street in 1994.

The former cast member later said she felt "bitter and twisted" when she asked to be written out, saying that she had struggled having no creative control over the character.

The Grammy Award nominee - known for her song Torn - has more recently appeared on the Masked Singer, with her performing as Panda on the popular ITV competition.

And having won the series over the weekend, Natalie is up for experimenting a bit more - with her even open to the possibility of returning to Neighbours. It helps that Beth's son Ned Willis, played by Ben Hall, is still a current character.

"I'd consider it, yeah," said Natalie, who has vowed that her new life motto since becoming a mum to son Max, two, is to "have more fun" and not take herself "too seriously."

She continued: "I would consider going back, I think it would be lovely to walk through those doors. I mean, I probably won't recognise anyone - not even my [on screen] son."

The actor said it's a "travesty" that the soap could come to an end, adding: "All of us love Neighbours. We've grown up with Neighbours and I think it's just it should go on forever."

She further commented: "I mean, this is just a travesty. So wherever the petitioners have sign it, I'm on board. Let's keep the show running is my opinion."

Natalie made her on-screen debut in the soap back in 1992, with her character having been involved in several storylines during her two year stint on the show.

This included Beth, who was a builder's apprentice, ditching fiancé Brad Willis, played by Scott Michaelson, now 53, on their wedding day after discovering he was having an affair.

Amid the potential of the show being axed, producers have already recruited Ian Smith, 83, to reprise his role as Harold Bishop.

And they're reportedly trying to woo back Kylie Minogue and Jason Donovan, both 53, for cameos. In 1988, 20 million tuned in to see their characters Scott Robinson and Charlene Mitchell wed.

Meanwhile, the Masked Singer has been renewed for two more series at ITV, after 6.3 million tuned into the final on Saturday. And the Masked Dancer will return later this year.
