Nat Sciver-Brunt nominated for ICC’s Women’s Cricketer of the Year as Joe Root makes Test shortlist

England’s Nat Sciver-Brunt has been shortlisted for the ICC’s Women’s Cricketer of the Year prize, while Joe Root is nominated for the men’s Test award.

Sciver-Brunt won the Rachael Heyhoe Flint Trophy in 2022 and is among four contenders to claim the award for the leading female player across all formats once more, after another superb year in which she scored almost 900 international runs and helped England to a memorable 8-8 Ashes draw with Australia. She faces competition from Australian pair Beth Mooney and Ash Gardner, as well as Sri Lanka’s Chamari Athapaththu.

Root, meanwhile, averaged 65 in Test cricket, starting the year with a fruitful tour of New Zealand and then enjoying a fine Ashes series in which he made his first century against Australia for eight years. He is one of four players nominated for the men’s Test prize, along with Australians Travis Head and Usman Khawaja, and Indian spinner Ravichandran Ashwin.

The white-ball shortlists were announced earlier this week, with Sciver-Brunt also up for Women’s ODI Cricketer of the Year and team-mate Sophie Ecclestone in contention for the T20 equivalent, while seamer Lauren Bell is among the nominees for Emerging Women’s Cricketer of the Year. However, Root is the only England men’s player to feature on any of the shortlists after a miserable year for the white-ball side, headlined by their dismal 50-over World Cup defence in India.

Pat Cummins, who captained Australia to World Test Championship and World Cup glory, heads the shortlist for the Sir Garfield Sobers Trophy, awarded to the Men’s Cricketer of the Year.

Team-mate Head also features after his match-winning hundred in the World Cup final, along with Indian pair Virat Kohli and Ravindra Jadeja.
