NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) has announced that it will remain closed through Monday due to its location within the mandatory evacuation zone of the Eaton Fire. The laboratory released a statement on Wednesday detailing the steps being taken to ensure the safety of its facilities and personnel.
According to JPL, all facilities, labs, and hardware at the center have been secured and protected. Operations of the Deep Space Network, typically conducted at JPL, have been relocated to a backup operations center offsite to ensure continuity of essential functions.
While employees were initially instructed to work from home on Tuesday night, a small number of critical personnel were required to work in person on Wednesday morning. JPL emphasized that the safety of its employees is the top priority and expressed solidarity with the neighboring communities affected by the fire.
The laboratory acknowledged the challenges and devastation faced by the communities surrounding JPL, many of which are home to its employees and their families. By taking proactive measures and relocating critical operations, JPL aims to minimize any potential impact on its workforce and ensure the continued safety of its facilities.
