NASA Announced Increased Chance of Asteroid Hitting Earth in 2032. Internet Is Hilariously 'Rooting for the Asteroid'

NASA has updated its estimate of the likelihood that an asteroid could collide with Earth in 2032, raising the probability from 1.6% to 1.9%.

Despite the low probability of a collision, the news made an impact online, with X users sharing their dramatic takes on the potential doomsday scenario.

"I'm gonna need that percentage to be way higher and the timeline moved up to this year, say next week is fine," one user quipped. "Can it come sooner, please?" another asked.

Others joked about "skyrocketing" hotel prices in the asteroid's potential impact zone, while one person sarcastically suggested, "Just tariff the stupid rock."

The news comes amid polarizing political unrest with the Trump administration in its third week, having already initiated a dizzying array of changes domestically and globally. News-cycle fatigue could be one reason commenters seemed to welcome the hypothetical catastrophe of an asteroid crash with open arms.

"Finally, some good news!" one commenter wrote, while another posted, "Keep going, ASTEROID!!! We are rooting for ya!!!"

Experts warn that these probabilities will fluctuate over time as scientists continue to monitor the asteroid's trajectory, though the odds of an actual impact remain slim. Even in case of impact, the asteroid's relatively small size—less than 100 meters across—makes it unlikely to induce Armageddon.

In the absence of more definitive news, the asteroid is a big hit online.
