Napoli hand Rangers European progress chance as Champions League Plan B kept alive by Ajax dumping

Rangers have been handed a major pre-Liverpool boost as Napoli dumped Ajax to keep European hopes alive and kicking.

Giovanni van Bronckhorst's men are yet to get off the mark in the points and goals columns in the Champions League this season and they know they need to have a go and get something out of the game in part two of the Battle of Britain. Jurgen Klopp's side ran out winners eight days ago at Anfield with Trent Alexander-Arnold and Mo Salah on target for the EPL giants.

Ajax - who hammered Rangers 4-0 on matchday one - sit three points ahead of the Light Blues but have now played four games following their defeat in Naples. A result this evening would not only get the Ibrox men on the board but would also leave them at maximum two points behind the Dutch giants with the duo to go head to head on matchday six. That scenario would keep hopes of European football in the Europa League alive for after Christmas.

The home side head into this one off the back of a big 4-0 win over St Mirren in the Premiership while Liverpool came out on the wrong end of a five-goal thriller against Arsenal.

Should Rangers pull of a stunning win they would move to within three points of tonight's opponents in second spot and level with Ajax with a game against Napoli in Italy next up. Defeat and they will be officially out of Europe's premier competition and be left fighting it out for a Europa League berth.

RANGERS XI: McGregor, Tavernier, Lundstram, Goldson, Jack, Colak, Kent, Davies, Sakala, Barisic, Arfield.

Subs: Robby McCrorie, McLaughlin, Yilmaz, Davis, Matondo, Sands, Morelos, Wright, King, Devine, Tillman.

LIVERPOOL XI : Becker, Gomez, Fabinho, Van Dijk, Konate, Firmino, Henderson, Elliott, Tsimikas, Nunez, Carvalho

Subs: Adrian, Kelleher, Thiago, Milner, Salah, Diogo Jota, Robertson, Bajcetic, Phillips.
