Naples rocked by strongest earthquake in 40 years

  • Naples experienced a 4.4 magnitude earthquake, one of the strongest in 40 years, causing residents to flee their homes.
  • The quake, preceded by a loud roar, struck at 1.25 am, shaking the city for about 20 seconds, followed by two hours of tremors.
  • The epicentre was located beneath Pozzuoli, west of Naples, within the Phlegraean Fields volcanic area.
  • Firefighters rescued residents trapped in damaged buildings, and authorities closed schools and set up shelters.
  • Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni is monitoring the situation, while experts consider a major eruption unlikely despite the significant seismic activity.
