LONDON (AP) — The Victoria and Albert Museum in London is set to launch a new exhibition titled “NAOMI: In Fashion” in June, celebrating the illustrious career of supermodel Naomi Campbell. The exhibition will feature a collection of iconic designer outfits worn by Campbell, who is renowned as one of the most prominent models and Black women in the global fashion industry.
With a career spanning over four decades, Campbell expressed her gratitude for the opportunity to showcase her life through clothing at the V&A. The exhibition will display around 100 looks and accessories from renowned fashion houses such as Chanel, Dolce & Gabbana, Versace, Yves Saint Laurent, Alexander McQueen, and more.
Notable highlights of the exhibition include a 1989 Thierry Mugler car-inspired corset, a striking bubble-gum pink Valentino gown and feather cape worn by Campbell at the 2019 Met Gala, and the iconic Vivienne Westwood platform shoes from her memorable 1993 catwalk fall.
Originating from London, Campbell's journey in the fashion world began at a young age when she attended stage school and appeared in music videos for artists like Bob Marley and Culture Club. Discovered by a model agent at 15, Campbell quickly rose to fame, becoming the first Black model to grace the cover of Vogue France in 1988.
The exhibition will also delve into Campbell's close bond with the late designer Azzedine Alaïa, who played a pivotal role in her career development. Alaïa's Parisian home and studio served as a creative sanctuary for Campbell, influencing his designs while propelling her career forward.
Furthermore, the exhibition aims to acknowledge Campbell's advocacy for diversity and inclusion in the fashion industry, as well as her support for emerging talents. The “NAOMI: In Fashion” exhibition is scheduled to run from June 22 to April 2025, offering visitors a unique insight into the remarkable journey of a fashion icon.
