Nando's set to open fourth restaurant in Cardiff

A new branch of Nando's is set to open in Cardiff. Plans have been approved for the popular restaurant chain to take over an empty unit in a retail park for what will be their fourth venue in the capital.

The new restaurant will be based at Capital Shopping Park in Leckwith, opening in the unit formerly occupied by Maplin. The space has been left vacant since 2018, when the electronics store fell into administration.

Planning applications for new signage and external alternations to the unit have been approved by Cardiff council, with work set to begin on the restaurant later this year. The new branch will join three others already established in Cardiff, with the chain operating two city centre restaurants in the Brewery Quarter and St David's shopping centre, as well as another in Mermaid Quay in Cardiff Bay. Other nearby locations include Nantgarw and Talbot Green.

It will also become the latest major chain to move into the retail park, with Starbucks recently setting up shop there to open its 15th branch in the city, joining high street food and drink outlets including Subway, Greggs and Costa.

Cardiff's diners can also rest assured that there will be no shortage of chicken in the capital anytime soon, with the opening of the fourth Nando's venue following the launch of Popeye's in the city centre earlier this year. The Louisiana fried chicken joint took over another vacant unit on St John Street earlier this year, with fans queuing outside to try the famous sandwiches and wings on its opening day.

The chain's first Welsh branch followed the arrival of Eat the Bird and Fowl and Fury in the capital last year, while Slim Chickens, Wingstack and Wingman have also all proved popular additions to the city's food scene.
