Name for Perth's new primary school set for approval

Councillors will next week be asked to approve the name of the new primary school being built in Perth.

The new school will replace Balhousie and North Muirton primary schools as the two schools merge.

Perth and Kinross Council's lifelong learning committee has been asked to back the favoured choice of pupils, parents/carers, staff and the local community.

Between September 27 and October 15 2021 pupils, parents, staff, local
residents and councillors were given the chance to submit name suggestions on an online survey.

A shortlist of four names was then drawn up with all four names meeting PKC's criteria that the name "might reflect a local geographical or historical feature", "avoid confusion with other schools in the Perth and Kinross area", and could "be used on signage, uniform and branding, taking account of length and spelling".

The shortlist was: Argyll Road Primary School, Balmuir Primary School, Balmuirton Primary School and Riverside Primary School. An online poll was posted between October 28 and November 5, 2021 and the original consultees were invited to cast their vote.

The overwhelming winner was Riverside Primary with 59 per cent of the votes. Argyll Road won 42 votes, Balmuir 18 votes, Balmuirton 44 votes and Riverside was the clear favourite with 150 votes.

Local resident and Perth City Centre councillor Chris Ahern is backing Riverside as the name choice as representing a “new era” of education and said it was "fitting" both school communities were asked to take part in the naming process.

The Conservative councillor said: “I fully support the name that has been suggested.

"This is an exciting time for the new school. This new school is located near to where I live in Perth, and in my council ward. My three children attended North Muirton Primary School so it will have a special place in my heart.”

Perth and Kinross Council’s lifelong learning committee has been recommended to approve the name Riverside Primary when it meets on Monday, January 31.
