Nadine Dorries red-faced after forgetting Scotland hosted Commonwealth Games

Nadine Dorries seems to have forgotten about the Commonwealth Games in Scotland eight years ago

NADINE Dorries is known for not exactly having a firm grasp of her brief.

The Digital, Culture, Media and Sport Secretary has previously shown she doesn’t have the strongest grasp of the digital world in a car crash TikTok video.

She’s also shown that media isn’t exactly her strongest point, struggling to understand how both Channel 4 and Channel 5 are run.

Dorries also doesn’t have the strongest record on sport – having been left red-faced after riffing about the wrong type of rugby at a world cup event.

So perhaps it shouldn’t come as a massive surprise that Dorries has seemingly put her sporting feet in her mouth once again.

Speaking to the BBC on Thursday morning as the Commonwealth Games get underway in Birmingham, Dorries was full of praise for the event.

The Sport Secretary said: “I don’t think we’ve had a sense of occasion, particularly a sense of sporting occasion like this, since the 2012 Olympics. It’s amazing to see for Birmingham, and for the West Midlands, and for sport itself.”

No “sense of sporting occasion” like this since 2012?

Dorries seems – perhaps unsurprisingly – to have forgotten that Glasgow hosted the same event as is being held in Birmingham in 2014.

The memory slip is even more embarrassing considering she went on to tell the BBC: “Most people remember what they were doing in 2012 at the Olympics. They remember that feeling of positivity and the event, the occasion.

“I think the Commonwealth Games are going to leave behind that same sense of occasion and achievement.”

Not if they’re anything like the 2014 games in Glasgow, which Dorries has forgotten about already.

And it seems like Dorries isn't the only one having memory problems.

Deacon Blue's Ricky Ross tweeted on Wednesday evening: "Channel 4 commentator just told us ‘this is the biggest UK sporting event (Commonwealth Games) since Olympic Games in 2012…'

"Didn’t Glasgow 2014 register?"
