Nadine Dorries interview interrupted as off-camera fight explodes live on air

An interview with Culture Secretary Nadine Dorries was interrupted live on air when an off-camera altercation exploded as the MP appeared on Sky News. Dorries was being questioned by Sky presenter Kay Burley on the Commonwealth Games, which kick off today in Birmingham, when she became distracted by the altercation.

“I’m sorry Kay, the Government... I’m afraid we’re going to have to go now,” she said, touching her earpiece. She told Kay in the studio: “The cameraman’s in a bit of trouble”.

A man could be heard shouting off camera: “Touch me then? You can’t because they’ll have you arrested for assault.”

Dorries said: “He’s not touching you,” and the man responded: “He can’t touch me madam, what do you mean he ain’t touching me?

“He can’t, I’ll have him arrested in five seconds flat.”

The MP was seen turning away from the camera and apparently asking for security as the interview continued to be broadcast, report Mirror Online.

Dorries told viewers: “The cameraman did not touch him”, before she whispered asking if she should move away from the scene.

This comes after Dorries was mocked for lavishing praise on Liz Truss, after she noticed the Tory leadership hopeful was wearing “circa £4.50 Claire’s Accessories” earrings.

Dorries’ remark was shared on Twitter alongside a link to an article from the Daily Mail that accused Truss’s challenger, former chancellor Rishi Sunak, of wearing a £3,500 bespoke suit on Sunday.

The Tory MP, who is favourite in the race to No 10 as Boris Johnson’s replacement, was also singled out for wearing £490 Prada loafers during a visit to a building site in Teesside over the weekend.

Dorries, who is backing Truss in her bid for PM, wrote on Twitter: “@trussliz⁩ will be travelling the country wearing her earrings which cost circa £4.50 from Claire Accessories.

“Meanwhile… Rishi visits Teeside in Prada shoes worth £450 and sported £3,500 bespoke suit as he prepared for crunch leadership vote.”

Responding to Dorries’ clumsy endorsement, Tory MP Angela Richardson said: “FFS Nadine! Muted.”

Labour MP Jess Phillips added: “Wonder if two thirds of earrings are not made in the UK and if Liz Truss thinks it’s disgraceful.”

Her joke was in reference to Truss’s infamous “that is a disgrace” diatribe over the amount of cheese being imported into Britain, which she delivered during a Tory party conference in 2014.
