Naby Keita enters defining Liverpool period as fresh details emerge over injury comeback

It's an irony that was probably not lost on Naby Keita this week. Having finally regained some level of fitness with a return to training last Friday, the Liverpool midfielder still found himself unavailable, through no fault of his own, as Ajax awaited in the Champions League.

Keita, along with Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, was left out of the Reds' squad for their group-stage campaign in early September as he continued to nurse a hamstring injury that has so far kept him away from match involvement entirely to date.

Jurgen Klopp initially believed his £52m star would be unable to make a telling contribution in the condensed group-stage calendar given the severity of his issue at the time, leaving the decision to omit him to initially look like a sensible one.

Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher has leapt to the defence of under-fire Tottenham manager Antonio Conte and suggested supporters vent their displeasure at his style of play in the direction of the club's chairman Daniel Levy instead.

Conte made the move back to the Premier League, having previously won the division with Chelsea in 2017, last November when Nuno Espirito Santo was sacked after a woeful four-month reign at White Hart Lane. The former Porto goalkeeper lost five of his last seven games as Spurs boss and left the club sitting eighth in the table.

The Italian was named as Espirito Santo's successor and impressively managed to secure Champions League football at White Heart Lane at the expense of north London rivals Arsenal after the Gunners' late-season capitulation.
