A mysterious odor at a Denver home has left one person dead and four others hospitalized, while authorities work to uncover the source of the toxic fumes.

The incident occurred early Tuesday morning in Denver's Green Valley Ranch neighborhood, prompting a 911 call from residents reporting breathing difficulties, Denver Fire Department spokesperson JD Chism told The Denver Post.

Firefighters arrived at the single-family home at 7:26 a.m. to find one adult deceased and two children and two adults in need of immediate medical treatment. Another two individuals were evaluated at the scene, Chism confirmed. All affected residents appeared to be members of the same family.

Officials have yet to determine the cause of the noxious odor. Chism noted that an investigation was underway in coordination with the Denver Police Department, though he added there was no indication of criminal activity.

"At the moment we are working with Denver police with the investigation to determine what the actual cause was," he stated.

Xcel Energy spokesperson Michelle Aguayo ruled out a natural gas leak, clarifying that the incident was "not a natural gas odor or leak issue." The Denver Police Department also confirmed it was conducting a death investigation but provided no additional details on the cause.

As the community waits for answers, officials continue to investigate what led to this tragic incident in the otherwise quiet neighborhood. The name of the deceased individual has not yet been publicly released.
