Mystery of Ford Fiesta that ended up stuck in the mud on footpath above Saddleworth Moor

It was a case of the ultimate "higher car". Residents in Greenfield near Dovestone Reservoir were bemused by the sight of one vehicle today which had come to the end of the road.

The red Ford Fiesta was found abandoned on a track on snow-flecked hills above the village near Forty Row - a terrace of former mill workers houses on Saddleworth Moor. It is a popular path with walkers but never a highway.

Pictures of the car stuck fast in mud were posted on social media by Greenfield and Grasscroft Residents Association. The posted says: "Higher car! Anyone missing a red Fiesta? This frost covered vehicle has found a ‘parking’ place well ON the beaten track!

"Maybe a Sat Nav malfunction or perhaps abandoned; either way it is going to take more than three-point turn to extricate the car from its current location."

One resident speculated : "Some b****nd on a joy ride that got list. That route is NOT a public right of way for vehicles. There’s signage along that route clearly indicating it’s a footpath." Another posted: "Probably stolen and then abandoned."

But Katy Boulton posted: "We walked past it this morning. We got chatting to a resident of Forty Row who said it was a delivery driver's car.

"Apparently they made a delivery last night in the dark and then sat nav suggested they could continue up the lane."
