Mystery of ‘alpacas’ snapped wandering around Dumbarton is finally solved

Confusion that alpacas were on the loose over the weekend in Dumbarton has been put to rest.

We previously reported earlier today that bewildered residents spotted the unusual sight on Saturday afternoon.

Photographs of what looked like either three alpacas or llamas roaming around High Mains Avenue sparked major discussions over how the animals came to be wandering free.

Locals were flummoxed to see the adorable white creatures, with soft fleeces and long necks, spotted heading towards Old Kilpatrick.

It led to a flurry of speculation as to what the animals could be – some believed the four-legged pals were a pack of alpacas while others were convinced they had spotted llamas.

Twitter user @ crossy72_ who posted the pictures to social media on Saturday previously said: “There’s alpacas on the loose in Dumbarton.”

But other users weren’t so sure, with one replying: "Good spot, they're llamas though. Hopefully they got home OK."

But feuding families all over Glasgow can now breathe a sigh of relief as the trio has since been identified - as llamas from Overtoun Llama Lodges.

The mystery was solved after owner Tracy Wood saw the story on Glasgow Live and recognised her beloved llamas.

Tracy said: “There are our wee family of llamas! Delilah, Rosa and baby Noah.

“Lucky for us they crossed A82 at traffic lights and didn’t cause any accidents. They are back home safe and secure at Overtoun Llama Lodges.”

Partner Kevin, who has been looking after llamas for the past 20 years, thanked the cyclists, police and pedestrians that helped guide the llamas home.

He told Glasgow Live: "It was a bit of an adventure for them! Llamas can clear a fence of 6ft and new fences arrived over the weekend so we think they took it as their opportunity to go on a wee escape.

"I think the spring weather and all the exciting smells appealed to them. They are dead gentle and calm. Usually they wouldn't go anywhere near cars but we know that they used the pedestrian cross. They must have thought the cars stopped just for them!"

Kevin managed to coax the llamas back to the farm by leading 10-month old Noah in the direction of home – and the other two soon followed.

"Wee baby Noah led the way and then we managed to get them all in the horse trailer," he said. "The escapees are all safe at home now and are very settled.

"I know that everyone was a bit surprised to see llamas in Dumbarton but we'll be opening the farm this June hopefully so people can come visit them - rather than the other way round!"

A Police Scotsman spokeswoman said: “Around 12.45 pm on Saturday, 2 April 2022, police received a report of three Llamas on High Mains Avenue, Dumbarton who then made their way onto a cycle path heading towards Old Kilpatrick.

“The animals were safely retrieved a short time later by their owners.”

We’re so happy Delilah, Rosa and little Noah are back home where they belong!
