Mystery man writes thousands of Tripadvisor reviews on McDonalds, Greggs and Metrolink

For many of us, Tripadvisor is a handy tool to help with life's big decisions.

Whether it's where to eat, visit or stay, there's always someone who has been there and documented their experience for the benefit of others.

You may even have left a handful of reviews yourself.

But for a small minority, this important public service is a way of life.

One such person is 'Barry H', a Tripadvisor user from Stockport who has left more than 6,000 reviews on the site.

His wonderful assessments of the frequently mundane have won admirers on social media after being highlighted on Twitter by Sean Cummins.

Going by the username 'Bazonian', Barry has rated everything from fast food restaurants to train stations, statues and even the Metrolink since joining Tripadvisor in May 2015.

However, his favourite subject to scrutinise appears to be McDonald's, having left hundreds of reviews following visits to branches across Greater Manchester and the UK.

After dining at one in Bredbury in October, he posted a four-star review titled 'Good for what it is'.

He added: "We ordered our meal from the car park on our phone.

"The food came promptly. I had a double big mac. It was tasty enough. Usual anaemic chips.

"Decent latte. Good and pleasant service."

Meanwhile, in December, he posted of a McDonald's branch in Hazel Grove : "My wife and I went to this store to get some breakfast.

"We ordered online, and waited for the food to be delivered to our car. We did not wait long.

"Food was hot and what we expected.

"A tasty double sausage and egg mcmuffin, hash brown and a good latte. Served with pleasant and efficient service."

Other review titles include 'Typical McDonald's fayre', ''Average McDonald's', 'Hit the spot' and 'I got what I required'.

Yet McDonald's is not the only fast food giant to have found itself under Barry's critical eye.

He reviewed one branch of Greggs in Stockport ten times between July 2020 and November 2021.

Following a visit in May of last year, he wrote: "Popped into this standard Greggs. One of two in Stockport.

"A decent latte needs a bit more coffee. Standard Greggs fare. Pleasant and efficient service."

In his Tripadvisor bio, Barry describes himself as a lover of theatre, the arts and food, as well as a "football and cricket fan".

And his reviews certainly touch upon a wide range of subjects.

Rating Manchester's Metrolink four stars, he said: "This is a expanding tram network across parts of Greater Manchester.

"It does not go all over Greater Manchester yet. Goes extensively through the city centre.

"Fast and efficient. Where it goes a good service."

Barry reserved special praise for the Dragon Miniature Railway in Marple, which he described as "chuffing brilliant".

Of the railway's 26 Tripadvisor reviews, 13 were made by Barry.

He was less enamoured with Birch services on the M62, which he described as an "average service station. Nothing special."

A Richard Cobden statue in Stockport did enough to earn Barry's seal of approval this month when he called it "an imposing statue" in a glowing five-star review.

While the majority of his reviews are positive, he is not afraid to speak out about a disappointing experience.

Following a visit to a McDonald's branch in December 2017, he blasted its 'rubbish service', adding: "Went into McDonald's for breakfast before getting the train.

"Loads of staff standing around aimlessly not doing much, waited a long time in the queue, the number system not working.

"Had a double sausage and egg McMuffin, decent enough, nice hash brown, loved the cookie crumb latte.

"Good food for all the family. rubbish service."

Mr Cummins, from Chorlton, said he became a 'big fan' of Barry's reviews after discovering them several years ago.

He added: "What I like most about Barry is his commitment to the disappointing and the mundane, and never failing to review it online.

"No matter how many times he’s disappointed – and every visit he calls his fries “anemic chips” – he steadfastly troops back time after time, undeterred, for more underwhelming food.

"His attention to detail is pleasing too.

"He seems a lovely man and kudos to him for treating his family to seemingly non-stop meals out. I'm a big fan."

The Manchester Evening News tried to contact Barry through Tripadvisor, but he is yet to respond.

For now, the identity of this heroic one-man reviewing machine remains a mystery.
