A mystery La Liga player went incognito in order to play in Gerard Pique’s Kings League.
The Barcelona legend has set up the new seven-a-side format in Spain. Team presidents include former Spain teammate Iker Casillas and Manchester City record goalscorer Sergio Aguero. Pique announced his retirement from the professional game in November after leaving the Camp Nou and has been promoting his new venture.
And he teased the involvement of an unknown La Liga star, who was deep undercover after not being given permission by his club to take part. But he did so anyway, sporting a Mexican wrestling mask and black base layer with long sleeves, suggesting that he could be identified by arm tattoos. The masked man was filmed arriving at the venue for the game between XBUYERS and Kunisports. Wearing the number 69 on his back below the name “ENIGMA”, the player took extreme measures to remain anonymous to avoid sanctions from his club.
Now fans have been trying to work out who the unidentified baller is from a vague description issued by Pique. The former defender said: “A Primera Division [La Liga] footballer under the age of 30 will play wearing a Mexican wrestling mask to hide his face and long sleeves to cover tattoos.”
Suggestions have included former Real Madrid and Sevilla star Isco and Pique’s former Barca teammate and current Celta Vigo outcast Denis Suarez. Pol Lirola and Rodrigo Riquelme of Elche and Girno respectively have also been put forward.
However, eagle eyed fans spotted a neck tattoo on the player, which was visible beneath his mask. That led to claims that the player was in fact former Cadiz forward Nano Mesa.
