Mysterious Drones Spotted In New York Skies Raise Concerns

New York Governor Kathy Hochul

New York Governor Kathy Hochul recently addressed concerns raised by residents regarding unidentified drones flying in the skies at night. Governor Hochul reassured the public that there is currently no evidence to suggest that these drones pose a public safety or national security threat. She stated that the state is working in collaboration with the FBI and the Department of Homeland Security to ensure the safety of New Yorkers.

The source of these drones remains unknown, and there is uncertainty as to whether all the flying objects are drones or manned aircraft. Experts have pointed out that the presence of navigation lights on these objects indicates that the operators are not attempting to conceal them.

White House National Security Communications Adviser John Kirby mentioned that upon reviewing available imagery, many of the reported sightings appear to be manned aircraft operating lawfully. However, witnesses have reported sightings of objects that appear larger than typical retail drones, such as those seen above Island Beach State Park.

As a response to the numerous drone sightings, Picatinny Arsenal has requested and received a temporary flight restriction for its airspace until December 26. Additionally, the FAA is investigating the reported sightings and has issued a temporary flight restriction around the Trump National Golf Club in Bedminster.

The FAA spokesperson emphasized that they take all reports of unauthorized drone operations seriously and will investigate as necessary. Drone operators engaging in unsafe operations that endanger other aircraft or individuals on the ground could face fines of up to $75,000, along with the possibility of having their pilot certificates suspended or revoked.
