MyDerry readers tell us what you'd like to see for the city

Derry has been crying out for better infrastructure for decades.

Whether it's a proper road to Belfast or better facilities within the city itself, people have been campaigning for years to improve and modernise the place we call home.

It comes after a new 152-bed hotel in the Ebrington area was approved in a £15million boost by Stormont on Thursday (January 20).

The long-anticipated project includes £7.25million through the NI Investment Fund and £1.75million from Invest Northern Ireland.

The project will transform five buildings on the Ebrington site, including the Clock Tower, into a four-star hotel with spa and leisure facilities.

However, we decided to ask our readers what else do they think the city needs but doesn't have currently

Nearly 2,000 of you replied to the question, and here are some of their answers:

  • Mary Ni Luathairi - "The old Fort George, turned into a huge concert venue like The Odyssey in Belfast."

  • Christine Bulter - "Facilities for young adults....we don't have one night club in Derry."

  • Hugh Clifford - "More facilities for our vulnerable people with many different issues."

  • Niall McGuinness-McFadden - "An upgrade on inner-city living so many run-down and abandoned buildings in and around the city centre."

  • Jennifer Logue - "Leisure pool and slides."

  • Kevin Brown - "An Independent University of Derry."

  • Collette Ramsey - "An Olympic size swimming pool plus a fun pool for kids with slides."

  • Laura Ann - "Detox clinic."

  • Michelle Kelly - "Skate park for the youth as there's not a thing for them."

  • Samuel McGarrigle - "We could do with a Bob & Berts, Greggs, ASDA."

  • Liam Lafferty - "A crematorium and a proper mental health facility."

  • Glenn Jeannie - "Ice rank."

  • Decky McCormick - "An alternative/rock music bar."

  • Barney Conwell - "A decent road to Strabane."

  • Jacqueleen Begley - "An independent university that serves the Derry community."

  • Mandy Chapman - "A new animal rescue centre."
