MyDerry readers reveal their favourite Derry mammy sayings

There is no mammy like a Derry mammy.

Our MyDerry readers know that all too well. When we asked them their best Derry mammy saying, we received over 600 comments.

While there was a huge variety of comments encapsulating growing up with a Derry mammy, a few themes included the wooden spoon, the big light, going "up a tree in Rosemount" and simply "The Look".

Here are some of the fantastic responses we received:

Carmel McCauley said: "You better watch your face because if the wind changes you’ll be left like that."

Patricia Brown said: "Do you think I came up the Foyle on a banana boat?"

Aisling Barr was always reminded how wasteful it was to leave lights on when her Derry mammy told her: "This house is lit up like Dupont."

Maresa Higgins said: "If there was work on the bed, you’d lie on the floor."

Edel McConnell said: "Jesus Mary and Joseph and the wee donkey (blessing herself as she says it)"

Rhonda Labourn said: "Lord give me strength this day" and "wait til your Da gets home"

Tanya Ní Dheoráin always remembered to never leave the door open or her Derry mammy would ask: "Were you born in a field?"

Aileen Holmes even included a list that her daughter wrote of her Derry granny's sayings!

Ciara Mellon gave us a few iconic Derry mammy sayings: "I'm the only one who does anything around this house. Where's that wooden spoon?" and "My words are falling on deaf ears. Am I speaking a different language?"

Julie Moore said: "You couldn't like him if he was dipped in chocolate."

Tina Del Pinto said: "I've not sat down all day.... (Whilst sat down with a cuppa tea in her hand)."

Jj Lough said: "Get away from the front of the fire and let the heat out!"

Paula Bell said: "If you were any more laid back you'd fall over."

Bridgene Temple mentioned one that caught us all out at one stage: "I'll know if your lying. Let me see your tongue, if it's black you're lying."

Was your favourite Derry mammy saying included? If not, tell us what your favourite one is in the comments.
