Myanmar's deadly spiral: One year after coup, can civil war be avoided?

THE DEBATE © FRANCE 24

Is there no stopping all-out civil war in Myanmar? On the first anniversary of the coup that ended power sharing between Aung San Suu Kyi's National League for Democracy and a military whose candidates had just been trounced in a general election, a silent strike took place to protest the brutal crackdown against calls to return to civilian rule. Can peaceful protest still work?

We take stock of a vicious spiral after a year where violence has increasingly led to more violence. What to make of the coalition of longtime rebel groups in the hinterlands with the nascent People's Defence Force? Is the all-out civil war already here?

And what about the reaction of the outside world? Targeted sanctions have yet to move the needle, it seems. Will the recent pullout by oil giants TotalEnergies and Chevron make a difference? We also ask what neighbours Thailand, China and India think.

Produced by Charles Wente, Juliette Laurain, Léopoldine Iribarren and Louise Guibert.
