'My wife wants to help her sick friend in hospital - but I think she's being selfish'

When someone is ill, friends and family will often want to rally around and lend support.

So when a woman's best friend was diagnosed with cancer, it was natural for her to want to help. She even promised to be by his side for each of his chemotherapy treatments.

The kind gesture might be praised by many people, but not so much by the woman's husband.

Taking to Reddit anonymously her partner claimed he needed advice after the pair ended up in a fierce row when he insisted she did not "need" to accompany her pal, named as Anthony in the post.

According to the man, his wife needs to consider other people.

He said: "I had no issue with that at first but then this started affecting me. e.g, I can't go see my friends because I have to stay with my son on X day so my wife could be with Anthony for his treatment."

Her counterargument: "She said that Anthony needs company and that she's just being supportive and this is when he needs her the most."

However, things turned from bad to worse when the woman's husband asked her to miss a medical appointment and stay at home with their son, while he went for lunch with his mum and sister.

He explained: "I kind of flipped out at her and said that she doesn't 'need' to be with him and could literally go see him at home the next day or something. She threw a fit and called me cruel for forcing her to leave Anthony by himself since she's all he has and that I was making her look bad.

"I decided to just leave to end the argument," he added, noting that his wife stayed home and called him "selfish" when he returned home.

Many Reddit users on the Am I The A**hole forum were quick to take the wife's side, with people struggling to understand the husband's reasoning.

One user said: "Your son should be a higher priority than you going to lunch or hanging with your friends.

"Also? Chemo is hell. Nobody should have to go through it alone."

A second wrote: "Also why couldn’t the son go with him to visit grandma and aunt for lunch?"

And another person asked: "Why is the childcare of your son primarily your wife's responsibility?"

People also offered advice, such as hiring a babysitter, should the pair's schedules clash again.
