'My super dogs are changing the way children see people with disabilities'

A woman is on a mission to defy stereotypes and change children's perceptions of disabilities with the help of her 'super dogs'.

Chloé Fuller, 23, from Lancashire, was forced to leave school at the age of 13, after developing a rare heart condition, postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (PoTS), and Ehlers Danlos.

Chloé lost her independence and struggled to come to terms with her disabilities, but assistance dog Ted quickly changed that.

She trained him to respond to more than 100 commands, from helping fetch her shoes to safely reviving her after blackouts.

Now the duo, alongside new puppy Cinna, will be sharing their story at DogFest, with the hopes of making kids "less scared of disabilities".

Chloé, who has a wheelchair and feeding tube, told The Mirror: "We need to reframe the way society looks at people with disabilities.

"I meet a lot of children out and about and they are often nervous or scared. So I came up with The Super Spaniels show to help them feel more comfortable.

"After just one performance, I had so many kids approach me who weren't hesitant but excited."

The Super Spaniels show covers 24 hours in the life of an assistance dog and demonstrates the various ways they can help people.

Chloé used to visit DogFest every year and aspired one day to perform on stage - then her dream came true this year.

The Super Spaniels will be performing live at seven locations across the nation with the UK's biggest dog-friendly festival.

It's been a long journey for Chloé and Ted, after they met eight years ago at his breeder's house and formed an unbreakable bond.

Chloé said: "I collapsed and he just clambered onto my chest. It was the first time that anything medical in my life had become positive.

"From then on, I focused on how I could train Ted to help me do more."

Chloé and Ted were one of the quickest and youngest partnerships to qualify with Dog AID, after just 13 months of training.

Having Ehlers Danlos means Chloé's joints dislocate easily and her increased heart rate can often make her dizzy or faint.

Ted responds to a mixture of physical gestures and verbal commands to help Chloé navigate the world day to day.

Now, Ted is eight years old and Chloé recently got puppy Cinnabar - also known as Cinna - who will eventually take over as assistance dog.

She says Ted and Cinna are the best of friends, but their personalities are polar opposites.

Chloé explained: "Ted is your bomb-proof, reliable and really loving affectionate dog. Cinna is fiery and exhilarating but sometimes exasperating. He's going through her rebel teenage phase."

Life for Chloé just wouldn't be the same without her super dog duo.

She said: "I went from being predicted straight A's to leaving school and not getting any GCSEs or A-Levels.

"With Ted's support, I've gone back to studying and qualified to be an animal nutritionist. I couldn't have done it without him."

Chloé's one piece of advice for other teens like her is to "allow yourself time to grieve the life you lost - then find the things that make you happy and don't make you feel disabled".

She added: "It sounds silly but one of the biggest things I felt at DogFest was that I wasn't different to anyone else."

The next DogFest is at Radley Hall in Warwickshire on May 28 and 29. You can purchase tickets to see Chloé perform live here.
