'My son cut us out of his wedding as we're 'not good enough' so I'm selling the house he lives in rent-free'

While weddings are usually a happy occasion for everyone involved, they can also be a source of tension for some families.

One groom's parents were in for a rude awakening when their son uninvited them from his wedding as his bride's family thought they were 'not good enough' to attend and might 'embarrass' them at the wedding.

The mum and dad were taken aback at first and the upset father then made the decision to sell the house that they own but that their son lives in rent-free, the Mirror reports.

"Since he doesn't want us in his new life, he has to get out," the father of the husband-to-be wrote, taking to to Reddit for advice on the family situation.

In his post, the dad explained that he and his wife purchased a second home to be used by their son when he moved to college - and outlined how they've supported him financially.

He said they pay tax on the property, plus any maintenance fees, while their son, who pays no rent, sorts the utilities. And it sounds as if the arrangement worked for years, even after the son's fiancé, who the family previously liked, moved into the home. But trouble arose when the two lovebirds got their families together to meet each other.

The dad explained that as the families were preparing to enjoy a BBQ, his wife and daughter were ushered inside, along with his son, his fiancé and her family. Minutes later his wife and daughter left upset, and they returned home.

There he was told "our son and his fiancé along with her family don't want us at the wedding."

His post outlined: "According to what I was told 'We're not their kind of people'. I was livid, I called my son and asked him WTH this was about. He tells me that her family feel that we are not good enough and will embarrass them at a family wedding and that we are all uninvited from the wedding."

The dad continued: "I let a week go by to calm myself down and drive back to the PA house, the new future in-laws are in the house along with the fiancé. It appears that they all moved into the house They ask me why I'm there, I tell them that since we aren't invited to the wedding, I was coming over to talk to my son.

"They tell me to leave their house. I lost it, and told them that they had 30 days to get out. Tell my son I'm selling the house and he could find somewhere else to live with all of you. I go to a realtor in town and list the house for sale."

It was then that the upset father turned to the Reddit forum, keen to find out if he was in the wrong for "taking a hard stance on this".

Thousands of people flooded to the comments to respond, with many siding with the groom's parents. One person wrote: "[Not the a**hole]- Rock on man. He was wrong and there is no amount of excuses or words to convince otherwise. It overall seems toxic and there is no reason why he should allow anyone to exclude his family.

"I could understand if maybe you haven't been supportive or there were issues but based off what I read it baffles me why he would even do this."

Another said the son was "experiencing the natural consequences of his actions."

But a third suggested: "With your son I suggest you guys have a conversation see why is willing to cut you out for a new family. I mean it seems like you guys were happy until this relationship started. Don’t destroy your family to one up another."
