My mum became seriously ill after being neglected in Leeds care home, claims daughter

An elderly mum who was admitted to a Leeds care home became seriously ill after being neglected by care home staff, alleges her daughter.

Joyce Clarke was admitted to Seacroft Grange Village Care Home, operated by Springfield Healthcare, in August 2017 while suffering from vascular dementia. Her daughter says while there she was neglected and abused.

Fiona West, her daughter, went to visit her mum in November 2017 when care home staff told her she was unwell. They had not yet called a doctor and said they would wait to see how she was in the morning, but when Ms West saw her she called an ambulance.

She said: "She wouldn't have made tomorrow, as they worded it. She went into St James' and she was in there for 10 days with E. Coli.

"In the process in between all this mum had been abused as well in there. She'd got grab marks all on her arms and, obviously neglected on medication grounds.

"She'd gone without tablets for three months for her vascular dementia, she'd got constant water infection upon water infection. Her food was put in front of her and mum was at that stage where she couldn't feed herself, she didn't know what it was there for.

"They used to rely on me going in to feed her on her lunchtime, tea time."

Eventually Ms West took the care home to a tribunal for safeguarding where she says they were found on six counts including neglect, medication, abuse and nutrients. Eventually, Joyce was moved from the care home to another, where she passed away on 15 December 2017.

If Joyce had not been moved, Ms West says she would have been dead before then as she was approached to sign an end of life plan for her mum. However, when the staff were asked how long they thought she had left they did not answer.

Ms West said her mum was her "world" and she just wanted justice. She said: "I don't want anyone else's family to go through what I went through."

Seacroft Grange was contacted for comment and said their company policy was not to comment on individual cases.
