'My marriage is over, so I bought a diamond divorce ring to celebrate'

A woman who found herself divorced at the age of 34 has bought a diamond ring to celebrate the occasion. Kirsty Hulse, founder and CEO of Roar Training, said she has always felt it is important to have a strong and loving relationship with ourselves.

After the pandemic affected her business and her marriage broke down, Kirsty says she realised even more that by nurturing herself, it helped to develop resilience to get through life’s difficult times. Speaking to Diamonds Factory UK, Kirsty said: “I think we should celebrate all of life's chapters.

"We tend to celebrate beginnings - marriages, engagements, births - but we're not so good at celebrating the endings. My divorce wasn't an ending, it was a beginning. A beginning to a new chapter, a deeper connection to myself and restored friendships. I wanted to celebrate that, too.

“Rings are something you often wear for life. I wanted a constant reminder of this chapter, this difficult and painful journey that taught me so much.”

“I had a divorce party as well - we had a ceremony, cake, and I threw a bouquet. Marriages are parties, so divorces should be, too.”

Explaining her choice, Kirsty said: "I decided I wanted a ring. A ring to cement this chapter in my life. A chapter where I am totally, utterly committed to Kirsty Hulse.

"A chapter where I am committed to loving myself, unconditionally. A chapter where I never abandon myself or my dreams again."

She added: "I asked Silver Hreen Jewellery if she could make me something and it's so beautiful. I have been patient waiting for it, not a virtue of mine, and it's totally exceeded my expectation,.

"I can feel the love she poured into it when making it. I will wear this literally forever and it's inscribed with a mantra I've used a lot when meditating the past few years - present moment, perfect moment."

The ring isn’t the first purchase Kirsty has made in a bid to symbolise loving herself. “My most expensive "purchase" has probably been putting money into investments - another way to love ourselves!”

She added: “Our relationship with self informs literally everything. If we don't feel good in ourselves, if we treat ourselves badly and are hugely critical, we show up from that place. For me, at least, (and we are all different) if I am not feeling good, it's harder for me to connect with others. Our relationship with self should always be our first port of call - we HAVE to become our own best friend because well...what else is there?”

“Spending time with yourself is important - loving, intentional, quality time. Take yourself on dates, spend time doing all those things you really want to do but maybe sometimes don't prioritise the time for.”

With Valentine’s Day renowned for couples spending it together, Kirsty sheds new light on how actually spending some time on your own on this day is just as important.

“I often spend Valentine’s on my own! Even though I am in a relationship again, I will still prioritise spending some time alone this year. I think happiness is really wonderful when shared with others, though our sense of worth should never be contingent on other people.”
