'My marriage is my number one priority - it's more important than my kids'

Many parents claim to put their children's needs above all else. However, one couple has spoken out about taking a decidedly different approach.

Sofia and Jay have been married for 27 years, and often share their pearls of marital wisdom via their popular TikTok channel, where they tackle topics such as "scheduled intimacy", being "lonely in your relationship", and " Valentine's Day advice".

However, one recent video may have surprised some followers, with Sofia and Jay openly admitting that they prioritise their marriage above their own kids, claiming this approach makes them better parents.

Boldly claiming that "your marriage is more important than your kids", the couple - who go by the username @27_years_married - believe other parents should take note if they want to remain happy long-term.

Explaining their position in the vid, Jay argued: "Your marriage should be your number one priority, not your kids".

Agreeing with this controversial position, Sofia added: “Mums I know why you had that reaction is because every mom has this instinct to take care of their baby right? We love our kids, we have a son and a daughter we were not saying not to prioritise your children.

"I’m going to double down on this though mums, our society tells you that husbands are disposable and by your comments, I know you think that too and I’m going to challenge you on that".

Driving home their point even further, Jay added: "You’re wrong if you think your kids come before your marriage because when you have a strong foundation your chances of having happy, healthy, well-adjusted kids goes up exponentially".

The clip has certainly gained plenty of interest - clocking up nearly 800,000 views - but not everyone is fully on board with this approach to parenting, with many believing their child's needs should come before everything else.

One person reasoned: "I can replace a husband, I cannot replace my kids, they will always come first."

While another wrote" "I love my husband more than words can say, but no way in hell is he or our relationship more important than our child."

However, others completely understood the point Jay and Sofia were making, with a third person remarking: "When the kids grow up and move out, the marriage is all that is left".
