'My husband won't let me turn the heating on but finds the money for nights out'

A woman has been left fuming with her husband as he will often spend a lot on nights out and fancy lunches with work colleagues but refuses to put the heating on at home. The wife took to the 'Am I Being Unreasonable?' forum on Mumsnet to explain that the cost of living crisis has left her and her husband thinking a bit more about their energy bills as they are careful not to spend too much.

However, as the woman explained, sometimes her husband's priorities do not seem to match. She said: "Cost of living crisis, soaring energy bills... you know the score. My husband is very much of the 'put on another jumper' type (ps I’m already wearing one, thick socks and slippers in the house, on occasion a jacket), all on the pretence that we need to be cautious with bills etc."

However, sometimes she will notice that her husband might go out and buy rounds of drinks for friends at work or buy lunches instead of bringing one from home.

She said: "I feel like this is the only area of his life he is frugal with, meanwhile he pays for rounds of drinks after work, going out for lunch everyday when working in the office, whilst I suppose my work doesn’t have that culture."

The woman does not work in an office and instead works from home so has to put up with a cold house everyday.

She is now considering confronting him and suggesting he should not spend all that money on nights out and lunches so they can have more money to spend on their bills.

In response, many have been quick to support the wife with one saying: "Talk to him - come up with a clear budget for these things and put the heating on."

While another said: "If you want to put it on just put it on, I wouldn’t be asking permission in my own home, why do you think this is his decision to make?"
