A new mum says she's been left very hurt after her best friend's husband turned on her simply for breastfeeding her five-month-old son, accusing her of "indecently exposing" herself.
According to this shocked woman, the incident occurred at a recent BBQ she and her husband had thrown for family and close friends, and resulted in the indignant man leaving the party altogether.
Initially, everything seemed to be going well. When it was time for the baby's lunch, she headed inside to breastfeed him in the nursery, finding a quiet spot away from the garden gathering.
While she was busy nursing her child, her best friend and her husband also headed inside to find the bathroom. She reckons the husband may well have been having a bit of a "snoop" around the house because he ended up opening the door to the nursery, which is said to be nowhere near the bathroom, interrupting her son's feed.
Taking to Reddit, the confused mum wrote: "He was quite shocked and fumbled his words a little bit before closing the door and leaving. I was not very happy that this had happened because I had specifically gone looking for a quiet moment so the baby could eat, but it is what it is and I thought it was over.
"When I walked out of the house a little while later, I was surprised to see that my best friend and her husband had left. My husband tells me that when my best-friend's-husband came out of the house, he immediately reprimanded my husband for the fact that I was exposing myself and acting inappropriately in front of guests.
"Of course, my husband was very confused by what was going on, but my best friend's husband basically just grabbed my friend and the two of them left leaving everyone else quite stunned."
She continued: "A few hours after everyone had gone home, my best friend's husband started a group chat with me, my husband, and my best friend, and basically said that he could not believe how I had exposed myself to him today when I knew he was happily married, and that I should have more shame.
"He said that I was not setting a good example for my son, who would grow up as some kind of deviant because I am refusing to feed him in a 'normal and healthy way'."
The ordeal has left her feeling "quite upset", and she's been further saddened that her best friend hasn't opened or responded to any of her messages.
Her husband reckons their furious guest "has lost his mind", but she's now wondering whether she should have just stuck to bottle feeding while they had people over.
A number of fellow Reddit users have reassured her that she'd done nothing wrong whatsoever, and blasted her pal's other half as an "untrustworthy snake".
One person commented: "First, you're allowed to breastfeed wherever you want however you want. Second, you were in your house inside a closed room.
"You were not exposing yourself to a guest since guests weren't supposed to be there. If he felt he shouldn't have had to see you breastfeeding then he shouldn't have snooped. You do you."
Another remarked: "Breastfeeding is natural and I'm so sorry this experience has made you feel you ought to make concessions to other people even when in your own home!
"Why on Earth was he opening random doors in your house??? That should be the key point here! If they can't talk sense and apologise to you for wandering around, disrespecting your privacy, and making a scene, then I think you'd be better off without them."
